Cannot underestimate the importance of the transfer portal. NC state who are in the final four have all five starters, and two of their subs who are all transfers.

What NC State has done is remarkable, but it took a missed FT and a 3 pt buzzer beater in the final seconds against Virginia in the ACC tournament to keep their season going. What they've done since is very reminiscent of their 1983 NC run, so far. But to the original point, most definitely the transfer portal is a huge factor in most teams' success.

I was just reflecting and thinking about the amount of players across the country who were not heavily recruited in high school and went to smaller schools or mid majors and developed into incredibly productive players. Dalton Knect, DJ Burns, DJ Horne are just 3 off the top of my head.

Read an article that Knecht was a 5'6" as a junior in high school. Maybe that had something to do with not being highly recruited. Grew 5 inches while at Northeastern Junior College
But its also a great example for that reason. A lot of guys develop in their first 1-2 years in JuCo or 4 year college.

Knect is a great story as to why the current portal rules can help players. Some of these guys would be selling insurance if not for the new transfer rule that allows them to play up on a higher stage to show case their talent (not a knock just not the same as playing pro ball).

Obviously, but you're referencing players who were not highly recruited or started at small schools, and Burns does not fit that profile. He was a top five player in South Carolina and had tons of high Power 5 offerspaddyv71 said:

a kid can really help himself by going to a big program and showcasing his talents, and brining in 1 or 2 high caliber players can really improve your team a lot.

I think they're saying his growth spurt started as a senior in high school, and then he just kept growing at juco.
If memory serves Khris Middleton was a little like that. He was really young when he got here and grew a couple inches.

I would think using the portal to recruit is easier than the traditional method.
Go find proven 22 year olds instead of 5* 17 year olds.

Less risk in evaluating what they can do at the next level for sure and generally more mature … and more expensive.
