My girlfriends dog just got sprayed by a skunk and stinks to high hell. What is the best way to handle this without putting the dog to sleep ? ? ?

If you can spray up under the deck you can use a mixture of water, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap that will help. The soap binds with the oils and I think the hydrogen peroxide oxidizes whatever compound(s) stinks so bad. I used the same mixture on my lab last duck season and it worked fairly well.

From a post last week on getting rid of the skunk smell.

My friend thats a vet sent me the following solution:

1 tsp liquid soap
1 cup baking soda
1 quart 3 percet hydrogen peroxide

mix together ad put all over - let sit 4 mins

rinse - repeat

I have rinsed the dog once and this seemed to work fairly well. Im about to go rinse her again.

It will go away on its own. It just takes a little time.

Got to love it when it's not even your dog and you get stuck on skunk wash detail....

tomato juice will work too

All tomato juice does is make the dog smell like a skunk pizza.
It does have the advantage of keeping the stench from rubbing off on stuff.

I'd try to find FishingFool. I bet with his mutts he's had 'em sprayed by skunks at least 50 times.

For the next 2-3 months, everytime the dog gets wet, it'll be like he just got sprayed again. Then he'll dry and be fine, have fun.

I skunk scented Dorm 7 ( F1) my head year and it lasted ,, ,, oh about the rest of the year.

I saw a pink eskimo dog once while camping. Turns out a skunk had sprayed it, and the owners couldn't find tomato juice so they bathed it in Ketchup. Turned it pink!

Tomato juice does nothing.

Go w/ the hydrogen peroxide recipe you have. But mostly, it'll just take time.

Tomato Juice does nothing. However, Tomato Paste DOES work. Our dogs have been sprayed by skunk many times and every time we do: 1. Wet the dog and rub down with lots of tomato paste. 2. Rinse dog off and see how much smell is left. 3. If need be, rub in more paste or use some dish soap/ dog shampoo whatever is handy. The dog will still smell somewhat like skunk, but not NEAR as bad. And the dog will be able to come inside and not make everything else stink.

After everything else fails…The best and easiest method to do it is get some liquid dishwashing detergent and the ash from wood or charcoal fire (fireplace or charcoal grill). Squirt on the soap and then rub it in with the ash. Let it set on the dog for about 5 minutes.
The lie in the ash will break the chemical bond of the stink.

Sean. I know you thought you were just pulling a number out of thin air. The guess was pretty accurate. My highly trained and well fed heathens killed 8 skunks in one month.(March '05) A balance of 42 is realistic.
