I was surprised to see RC Slocum going through the security checkpoint (right behind me) at the Oakland Airport yesterday. Turns out we were on the same flight back to Austin. He had been visiting an Aggie and playing golf at Pebble Beach.

RC told me he lives near Milano now. And is apparently raising some horses. He spent part of the flight reading horse magazines. He also read some financial publications and paid particular attention to retirement and healthcare articles. The big book he was reading was Dead Certain - The Presidency of George W. Bush.

RC seemed to be in good health and enjoying his life. His wife was also doing well and liked working on puzzles like Sodoku. I got the feeling that he won't return to coaching, but I guess you can never say never.

RC was upbeat about A&M and the direction of our athletics. It was easy to tell that his blood is still Maroon!

Cool post but a little stalkerish.

You can tell he's off the payroll if he flies out of Oakland after playing Pebble.

RC was the guest speaker at the Dallas A&M Club several weeks ago. He's still an Aggie through and througha and he's still a class act.

I rode the elevator in Rudder with RC back in 2004.

He was tall and slender, with a bit of a stoop to his stature. His hair was more gray than the last time I remember. It was almost as if the time spent walking across campus, taking in the beautiful, asylum-like brown buildings and standing water puddles over the immediately previous years had taken more of a toll on his spirit than all those 7-5 seasons.

What really makes me curious is, how many of the people who talk so glowingly of RC now, which I agree he is a terrific guy, were calling for his head and riding the Fran hype machine back in 02?

JeffHamilton is either:

a) is creepy,
b) needs something that resembles a life,
c) tortures small animals, or
d) all of the above

So a guy can't even bump into R.C. at an airport without being labeled "stalker" and "creepy." I guess I need to tell celebrities to stay away from me in order to keep you guys happy. "Get away from me, ya bum!...I don't want anonymous losers on TexAgs to call me a stocker!" Tough crowd. :-)
