From the big 12 media day

I think, without question, Nebraska has the best fans in all of college football. I always felt that. I love going there, I love the challenge and the atmosphere around the stadium

I dont know what other school shows up 75,000 for a losing team. (A&M) And it doesnt suprise me Mack Brown doesn't know what the "best fans" are because he goes to t.u. He wouldn't know a great fan if it tried to have gay sex with him.

According to a couple of friends of mine the Nebraska fans sit on their hands the whole game until something good happens and complain non-stop when bad things are happening.

If NU fans aren't the best, they are certainly near the top.

He's been successful at all levels. Including internet fishing.

they are certainly among the best. they do have the added advantage of having no alternative when their team is doing poorly, though. it's either watch the 'skers or watch oprah.

Or watch corn grow. I hear that's the states 2nd most popular pastime.

As a football fan when your home field sells out for 34 consecutive seasons and has season tickets that are willed down from one generation to another, in a state so sparcely populated that on gameday the stadium technically is the 3rd largest "city" in the state......you can claim the be among the best fan base in CF!

Neither Texas nor A&M can come close to that kind of dedication from fans.

crazy eyes....what if the state of texas was the size on nebraska and only had 1 major university? again, they are great (and my 2nd fav big xii team)....largely due to circumstances.

Oh you mean the same school that couldnt even sell out its student section against its biggest rival?

The whole "classy fan" debate is a tad silly but having been to every Big 12 venue (except Iowa State), only a fool or liar wouldn't rank Nebraska fans at the top.

Nebraska fans are courteous, knowledgeable and fair.

In 2004, NU went 5-6 and had an average attendance of 77,692 (105% of capacity).

Here's what A&M has done the past 3 seasons

2005 = 5-6 = 79,732 (96% of capacity)
2004 = 7-5 = 74,498 (90% of capacity)
2003 = 4-8 = 76,243 (92% of capacity)

Are you talking "support the team the best" or "act the best toward opposing team"? These are 2 different questions. In my opinion no one comes close to NU for "supports the team". You can say it has a lot to do with the lack of options, but 34 years of sellouts is ridiculous and not all of those years were great NU football.

As far as "best behavior" I used to say NU hands down. But as thier program has started to slide, so has thier attitude. Somewhere between losing at home to us in 1998, where they showed incredible class, and now they have pretty much joined the rest of the pack. Are the bad ala Tech and CU? No. But they are not great either. Somewhere in all that winning under Osborne they forgot how to lose well.

Part of it is...it is NEBRASKA. There's nothing else around for Hundreds of Miles. No professional sports, nothing.

In Texas, there are teams like A&M, Texas, Tech, even Rice and Houston have followings. the entire state rallies around their college team. Texas is so divided, it isn't like that.

We also have the Cowboys and The Texans.

i thought CU fans were the best, especially the student section. maybe i missed something.

plano, so you're saying we avg'ed more than them w/ worse teams? thanks, buddy!

That is nullified by the fact that the Nebraska's state population (1,711,263)is 1/12th the size of Texas' population (20,851,820)

no it's not. it only takes 80,000 to fill a stadium. in texas you have many, many more "out-of-towners" who could give a sh*t about "local" sports and you also have people that live in the state that are "a nebraska away" from the nearest sports city.

point being, nebraska is an entire state dedicated LARGELY to one university....when times are bad, they still have enough to fill a stadium, when times are good the whole state is excited about it. it's a completely different story here.
RK

side-bar: does anyone have total alumni base numbers for the different big xii schools?

not really R K .did you see all the t shirts bought when WE won the MNC?....

you'll see a greater realative % of husker gear in nebraska during a 4 win season than ut gear in texas after a MNC.

Exactly and it's a lot easier to fill a 80,000 seat stadium when there are 20 million people in the state versus when there is 1.7 million.

not really. it's a function of interest moreso than population. 1 million people with a common interest can be more significant than 20 million who are diversified.

there are 10 D1 teams in texas, as well as a lot of AA and smaller. also, even travelling from one team to another in Texas can take hours and span hundreds of miles.
MidnightBevo
How long do you want to ignore this user?
not only are there 10 D1 teams, there are 2 NFL teams which are in cities different from the top 3 college teams. This doesn't even take into account that you have the option o something other that football if you so choose once basketball season starts. There are even more D1 basketball teams and 3 NBA teams.

In Nebraska you have one choice if you are a sports fan. Not so in Texas.

So should we compare Husker fans and Packers fans then?

Judging from the responses it would be a more level comparison?
houstontexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
not a ton to do in nebraska but they have some solid fans.
houstontexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
plano, you're obviously an OU alum.

in texas, unless you went to a&m, you generally aren't a big fan who will attend games. you fall into the texan/cowboy legion.

the NFL teams are what gobble up the vast majority of the t-shirt fans. nebraska has NO competition.
PlanoGuy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Let's also factor in that NU's undergrad enrollment is only 17K while A&M is 45K. Doesn't A&M have something like 20K or 30K in student seating?
