Hulla/Ryno- I am a Baylor fan. I am not bitter about anything. And I don't understand the Baptism comment. But here is my rationale for the Ags projected in 9th place.
1. I think the Ags have a lot of talent and can finish anywhere from 3-9. For me, it was difficult to pick 3-9 because I think any of those teams could finish 3 and any of those teams could finish 9th.
2. I like the Ags- coaching and talent wise. But the Big 12 is tough next year. I think the Ags have weaknesses down low now that Elonu is out of the picture. Davis is a scrapper and crafty but his athleticism is not great. He will struggle with double teams. Loubeau could be great and obviously A&M will finish better than 9th if he does become great, but it is a large question mark. It would be like me counting on Anthony Jones at Baylor next year. He might be great, but there is no history there to let me know I can count on him...
3. Ags have 3 proven scorers and a lot of promise. Davis is very efficient and will probably average close to 15 ppg. Sloan and Holmes can score but they shot less than 40% from the field last year with Carter drawing the toughest defensive assignment. This year defenses will key on Sloan and Holmes and I am not sure that those 40% shooting percentages are going to improve.
4. Loubeau shows promise. Roland might surprise offensively a little. Dash Harris shot horribly last year. One of the freshmen will have to step up. But let's be serious, only top 30 in the nation types really make a big impact as freshmen in this conference and only Kansas, Kansas St (Judge), UT and OU signed those types this year.
5. If I had to rank over I would probably put the Ags at 8th ahead of Iowa State. I think Gilstrap- junior college 6'6" -will take a lot of pressure off Brackins and allow them to sneak some wins in the North. I think the Aggies are a better team but I am not sure they will have a better record due to the brutal nature of the South.
You usually need 3 guys to win games offensively and I think A&M has the weakest 3 of the teams I ranked 3-9:
3. KSU (Clemente, Pullen, Judge)
4. OU (Gallon, Crocker, Warren)
5. Baylor (Carter, Dunn, Udoh)
6. Mizzou (Tiller, English, Taylor)
7. OSU (Anderson, Moses, Munuelo)
8. Iowa St (Brackins, Gilstrap, Garrett)
9. A&M (Davis, Sloan, Holmes)
A&M, Baylor, OU, KSU, and OSU all have very talented freshmen classes. It will probably come down to which class steps up the most as to how the teams are ranked. But in pre-season, I think you have to go with what is proven.
Most importantly, the schedule is not favorable for A&M. You want the tougher teams in the North at home. Ags have to go to KSU, Missouri and Iowa State. That is a tough draw since it might not matter where anyone plays Kansas next year.
That is my logic for better or worse...
