And when did he join the team? I keep hearing his name, but I take it he wasn't on the team last year.

This same question was asked several days ago and there is a thread somewhere on it. Basically, he is a stud HS linebacker at Arlington Lamar. He is tad less than 6ft., around 215lbs, and supposedly runs the 40 in 4.5 or so. He had over 100 tackles this year, I think, and won the District Defensive MVP in the same district that contains our LB commit, Jodie Richardson.

He got some offers from schools like SMU and TCU, I think, but really wanted to be an AG. His stepfather is an Ag, I believe. In any case, some good Ags familiar with the situation contacted Torbush and asked him to take a look. He did, brought Kennemer down for the red carpet treatment on an unofficial visit, and gave him preferred walkon status for next year.

In other words, we are getting a highly motivated kid, at a need postion, who has high grades, who wants to be an Aggie, and whose parents are willing to pay the ticket for at least the first year. I hope he does really well.

Thanks, but that thread about him is in the M&W. Some of us don't have access to that. But thanks for the info.

Well, actually, I'm not an M&W member, and I swear I put out this same information on a "free" thread a couple of weeks ago. Don't know whether it was on the recruiting board or FB. Anyway, there it is. Could be a really interesting story to watch.

This kid could be one that doesn't have all the "measureables", but is just a "football player". sometimes we don't get enough of those guys that can smell out the play and get to the ball.

Go Vikes! Jeremy Wariner is also from Lamar. They seem to produce some really good athletes, but very seldom any big time blue-chippers. Shawn Walters (USC) is the last one I remember. J. J. Joe went there too. Ags had a guy named Jim Brady from there who never contributed.

The kid really wanted to be an Ag. He turned down a free ride to Harvard to walk on here.

great info...thanks! I like to have some guys like this that bleed maroon and really want to be here...the kind that sacrifice their body on Kyle Field for the team and want to win in the worst way...may have a little less talent,
but contribute so many intangibles.
Glad I am not a recruiter as I would be in to
the "highway 6 runs both ways" too often with the recruits that aren't dying to be here!!

Guys if I'm not mistaken Torbush did offer him a scholarship but his dad offered to pay his way as a perferred walk on so the ship could be used on someone who could not afford to pay his own way.

If you want know about Chase ask Maroon on here. He apparantly knows the family pretty well and was the first one to post about Chase on here.

I also want to say that I am very excited about Chase if for nothing else other than his attitude.

another LB is always welcomed here. especially if the kid can play!

zagman, if that is the case, that is a great story in and of itself.

Uh, no, he was not offered a ship. By the time Maroon and company had brought Kennemer to Torbush' attention, we were about tapped out on ships. By then you would have been talking about giving him Coffman's ship, or Brights, etc. I think this all came to light right after they committed Featherston.

Maroon could correct me on this, but I am pretty sure Chase was offered a chance to walkon and earn a ship, only. That's what I've heard from the guys that were actually involved.

I think you are correct Outrigger. I do think he has a very good shot at being offered a scholarship at some point in his Aggie career though, if he would accept it.

I want to say I heard that if we had a ship avaliable, we would offer it to him. His step dad told torbousch to keep it and give it to someone who couldn't afford it and could help the team.

ccag02- You are totally correct in what his dad told Coach Torbush. This is a good player. I saw him play in the all-star game.

Sorry guys, I'd pretty much have to slap my boy upside the head if this was the case...

..and unless things have changed in the last 10 years, I don't believe the Ivy league schools offer full athletic scholarships. They used to offer partials as far as I know, but not full.

Outrigger has the story 99% correct. By the time Torbush saw Chase's film we didn't have a scholorship to offer. Chase is a preferred walk-on, but will have the chance to earn a schollie, though right now he might be getting an academic one.

He had written offers from SMU and Iowa State, and was told if he visited TCU and Utah he would be offered. He was also offered by Harvard and Yale - basically they get you into school.

He was first team all district his junior year with 125+ tackles , and Defensive MVP of his district this year with 140 tackles. My understanding is that Torbush really likes his chances to play and sooner than later - we'll see

Iowa State and several Ivy League schools. All in all, this is the kid I want to see in Maroon for the next 5 years.

Is it true that we are also having Chad Kugler S/LB from Richardson-Berkner walk-on?

At the very least he will make one terrific addition to our kickoff coverage, but personally think he could have similar success to former walk-on and NFL Safety Rich Cody.

Chase is from 5A school and nobody from A&M noticed him until we were out of scolarships?

Part of this rags to riches story just does not sound right.

Hard to fly under the radar in Plano,Tx. if you know what I mean.

Ivy League schools don't offer athletic scholarships, most don't even give academic scholarships. They only give need-based scholarships.

One of my neighbors played for Harvard. He got a need based scholarship. They needed a tight end (he was not financially need-based, in spite of living in my neighborhood). They used certain tricks (his parents were divorced, etc) to get him a full ride.

Of course, whenever he came home, he booked it to College Station with his high school friends because the girls in Cambridge were so nasty.

The story is 100% True. Torbush had never heard of him until another Ag brought Chase to his attention. By the way, he's from Arlington Lamar not Plano.

Re: Chad Kugler

He is actually an LB, now 6'2" and 218 lbs with a sub 4.6 40, 1300 SAT, Richardson Berkner HS. Made all-Metro team in Dallas. He was supposed to be the starting QB this year but got mono right before the season, missed a couple games, then played LB only when he returned. Was also a very good basketball player although he passed on bball this year.

I hear there's a pretty good chance he comes to A&M as a preferred walk-on and I sure hope he does! One of his older sisters is a current A&M student.

LB is obviously a need position for us and I have a feeling he's the kind who could become a real contributor for us.

well , from what everyone has stated.. doesnt sound like we need to worry bout his smarts in pickin up the defensive schemes.. sounds like a plus to me.. go Chase, and kudos to his dad being able to pick up the tab and leave a ship open..class all the way around..

I'm a Lamar season ticket holder. Chase is a tough, hard-nosed kid.

Kind of a tweener, in that while he might not warrant a 'ship at a D-1 program right out of high school, he's the kind of kid who is a great preferred walk-on, and could certainly earn a ship in the future.
