Don't hate me...I know this isn't football related. Me and the little lady just gave HER chihuahua a double dose of her medication and we need to know if we should induce vomiting or if she'll be ok but can't get a hold of her vet. Again, sorry for putting this on the football board but she be scurred and chit. Help!

I'm sorry man...I'm no vet...but how do you induce vomiting on a dog? I'm not sure their gag reflex works the same on dogs as it does on us. Besides...dogs are pretty damned resilient and yours will likely be ok.

We tried calling the vet, but there was no answer. If anybody knows of another 24 hr vet please let me know. Also, thanks for neither ripping me a new one for putting this on the football board or making fun of 'captain angry' for being concerned for a foo foo dog.

Oh, and the medications are sedralex and soloxine. One of them is thyroid and the other is puppy xanax

There's got to be 24 hour vet clinics open in Houston. Try plugging it into google maps. I wish I could be more help... best of luck. Dogs are tough... so try to be optimistic.

I'm not a vet, but a pharmacist. The thyroid medication won't do anything acutely if given two doses. The puppy xanax you have to be worried about CNS depression and respiratory depression. If it has already been a couple of hours you are pretty clear of any worries.

If it's been within two hours you can force her to drink hydrogen peroxide. That works to induce emesis most of the time. The levothyroxine shouldn't be too bad if only one OD. You will see increased heart rate, resp rate, blood pressure and abnormal energy levels. The xanax I dont know all that much about, though.
You can call A&M Veterinary Hospital. They are there 24 hours for calls like these.

Scot's reply was funny. But, I know how stressful it can be. My lab got struck by a rattler a few years back. In laredo there was no such thing as a 24 clinic. We basically spent the night feeding him water, vitamin C and benadryl. He made it and didnt even need antivenin.

You should be ok giving the double dose of soloxine for the thyroid problem. The other, I'm not sure, I have never heard of it. However, it could be dangerous especially with it being a Chihuahua - on smaller dogs it is much easier to overdose on. But I am only a vet student (posting under my boyfriends name) - so I would still try to call an emergency clinic and at least ask them. At the very least, I would probably go in tomorrow and do bloodwork to check out liver/kidney function. Good luck

How much hydrogen peroxide do I need to give her for her to yak? If we get it out I'd feel a lot better. Everybody is referring us to puppy poison control and there's a $65 charge for calling

I'm guessing that you have received the help that you need. But if you are still concerned tell me how much the dog weighs and what the dose in mg the alprazolam is.

Agvet05, we didn't get a response yet on the epilepsy medication. It's sedralex, she weighs 9 lbs and the dosage size isn't listed on the pill bottle. She is supposed to get 2 but she took 4.

That is probably phenobarbitol. The dosage should be on the bottle. It might list it in "grains". Phenobarbitol has a pretty wide safety range. Most of my patients could safely double or triple their normal dose with no side effects other than sleeping a little better that night. I can't advise you on your pup no knowing the dose. Some tech or sip lawyer is probably lurking to pounce on me for saying as much as I have.

And if it's epilepsy meds...are you sure it's not phenobarbitol?

Suck it up and get through the first two years. after that it gets alot better. I like the medicine aspect, so third year was a breeze. second year was my ***** year, but alot of people thought it was better than first.

Guys, thank you all for your help. Couldn't ever find the dosage but I think we're just gonna keep a close eye on the pup and keep the fingers crossed. She's groggy for sure but she seems to be handling it ok. Thank you all again!
