So we all know the Ukraine is weak but...

What is your general strategy in Risk? I try and conquer North America for 5 armies/turn and it is ideal only having to defend 3 entry points (Alaska, Greenland and Central America). If I have enough armies I will have an outpost in Australia. Anyone take a different strategy?

South America 1st if I can. Then to North America. Never start w/ Asia or Europe.

Fortify Australia. It's the only place with one point of entry and can be built into an impregnable Fortess of Evil. Just don't get carried away and try to take Asia all at once, or you'll spread yourself thin and get picked off like a shmee.

Back in the day we added Antarctica to our board and had it connect to Australia, South America and Africa.

i usually try to take australia quick and spread down southeast Asia to Africa. I then try to get South America.

Usually I don't care about holding much in Africa or Asia at all but the extra 5 or so armies at the first (from Aus and SA) of the game builds up when my opponents are fighting over Asia, NA, and Europe. If i can keep a link from SA to Australia and turn in a good bit I can usually take Africa and pretty much control the southern Hemisphere from there.

"Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia," but only slightly less well known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!"

When we played Australia was some of the bloodiest fighting at the beginning. It got to where everyone avoided it like the plague.

Been a while since I played but a few years ago I lived with 5 other guys and we decided to play a game for 2 hours or so and then head to bed because we all had to work in the morning.

About 5 hours later and it being 3am we finally finished, checked the time, quietly cursed the game of Risk, and went to bed to get some sleep.

Good times!

Go for either
1. Australia
2. South America
depending on which one you have a chance of taking/holding.

lay low for a while then try to spring for North America or Africa if the others are not an option.

Once in a fog of war game I kept and held Asia for a couple turns early and ended up winning the game. But as a general rule, never ever bother with Asia or Europe.

Everything above is usually what's good, but the best thing to do is talk to a player before the game and become temporary allies until you grab the basic countries required.

Take control of South America and amass large armies in Central America and North Africa to fortify your border and prevent others from taking Africa/North America.

Let others get in blood bath over Australia.

Sit back and don't do much except take a country or two every turn to earn risk cards. When the time is right and you have sufficient army advantage, split Central America army in two and take Western and Eastern US. Take Western army through Alberta, to NW Territory and end up in Alaska. Take Eastern army through Ontario, Quebec to Greenland (if you have enough army left for solid defense and there isn't much resistance in Iceland go ahead and take it to prevent opponent capture of Europe).

Continue to grow armies until the guy that took Australia is ready to throw down and go and have armageddon and wipe his ass off the map.

Game over.

I try to focus on the people-side of risk. Forming allies is a plus, but I try to get inside the head of other players. Try to convince them to attack a turn too early or to get in a massive war with another player.....needless to say, I am a pain in the behind to play risk with.

Besides that, I try to just roll with whatever countries I have.

http://www.conquerclub.com is horrible. Takes a week to play a game.

http://www.dominategame.com/ is the best way to play online.

i can't count the amount of times the final battle has been there.

normally everybody takes a break beforehand, turns their caps around and stands up for the rolling.

i kid you not. one time we had about 400 armies each and it took over an hour for just that battle and the game wasn't even over.

that's when you change it to 5 or 10 armies per loss, instead of 1 at a time

Several years ago I bought the game for the PC (it probably cost about 3 bucks). It had several different versions...

classic game play (like the board game),

ultimate game play (which was not played with dice, but with styles of attack such as flank attacks, defensive attacks, cavalry charges, generals, etc.)

and different maps to fight on, which included more detailed maps of Asia and the south Pacific, Europe and North Africa, and the western hemisphere.

You could also play different historical scenarios in different years from the late 1700's to the early/mid 1800's.

There is no telling how many hours I wasted playing those things. I would get sucked into it and burn a whole weekend some times.

Makes me want to go dig it out.

Conquer Club is VERY, VERY addictive... I'm OlJock99 over there.

I think I'm one of the last TexAgers still on there for the crew who went a year or so ago.

But it is pretty cool chatting with folks from all over the world.

CDub06, you just got a game invite.

Yeah, that to me is where the fun is.

I always had fun battling for the mind of the stupidest player. There's just something hilariously funny about trying to convince someone to do your dirty work for you on the premise that you'll protect them, too, and duke out who wins between you when everyone else is dead.
