How long do you want to ignore this user?
A buddy of mine from the Corps is getting out of the Army in a few months and is looking for job. He graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering (computer science track) in 2003. He is looking for a electrical engineering design job. Unfortunately he didn't do any engineering in the army so he has no engineering work experience.

If anyone knows of companies that are hiring EE's or other job opportunities please let me know and I will forward the info to him. Name, phone number, and email address of who to contact with the companies will be helpful.

Thanks & Gig'em

Is a person with a Computer Science degree (yes I understand it is computer engineering, but its software) really qualified for electrical engineering jobs? I doubt it.

Of course since only 6-10% of us are PEs I suppose that you have to dig far and wide for someone who you can be assured to actually be an electrical engineer.

Give it a rest Randy, your posts are tiring (and this is coming from a fellow EE EIT). Things work a little differently in the working world, not that you would know anything about that...

How many people other than doctors call themselves doctors and practice medicine and get away with it?

Very few

How many people other than lawyers call themselves lawyers and practice law and get away with it?

Again very few

So then why are there so many job titles calling people engineers and having people do engineering work who arent qualified to be engineers nor licensed to be engineers?

That is a mighty good question!

For example, my buddy gets an interview for NI in Austin, he gets an offer, an Engineering Tech major gets the same offer for the same job.

Does that mean that they care you are an engineer? Nope, might as well hire a smart business major then for the position, because they are going to tell you everything you need to know, so why bother with engineering degrees at all if no one is going to protect and value what we are good at.

So really, the problem with professional engineering are people like you, worse, people who are on the official track (so they claim) to become an actual engineer and then they dont care about protecting their title and their profession.

Certainly lawyers and doctors care to protect the integrity and exclusivity of their profession and their salaries reap the rewards, I think that engineers have been spineless wimps too long and have come to accept that they are just trained monkies.

Im sorry if I have valuable knowledge and skills and I would prefer to protect my expertise.

Look in the phone book for architect. Call them and ask who are the good MEP engineers they work with. Call the MEP's and just ask them if they need somebody (most do now even if they are not advertising) Then you can drop the architect's name/firm at the interview. Works well. I got an offer that way.

Good luck

MCC Computer Company (www.modularpc.com)has an openiing now for a design enginer.

Randy-
I am not sure your analogy works. There are very few companies who require a PE license to be an engineer. What they are looking for are people who have the knowledge and expertise in design and how to combine technologies to meet an end product goal. One of the best design guys I ever met had a BS in Math/Physics and a PhD in Physics from Rice. He could engineer circles around most anyone I knwo with a EE/ME and PE license.

Not a knock against those who have their derees in engineering and who have sat for the PE- I commend you.

The P.E. or no P.E. license debate could easily be a whole other thread.

Thanks for the advice.
