Didn't see this on p1...
quote:
Let's talk about the student ticket issues for men's basketball. We had more than 7,000 students register for a chance to get one of 4,200 tickets in a lottery for the Texas Tech game last night. Of the 4,200 selected, 611 didn't pick up their tickets. We reissued them, of course, to those students who had attended the most games this season previously. And in the end 141 of those didn't pick up, either, and we distributed those to just 38 students who showed up in the standing-room line at Reed almost two hours before tip-off.

$Bill doesn't seem like the type to do 2 different lottos (has to be a lot of work) and then still have over 100 student tickets not claimed very often.

i think the lotto may have discouraged alot of students who previously would have either camped out or woken up early in order to get tickets....

i know i have lost a lot of fire knowing its not in my own hands to get tickets for my buddies and me.

Yea instead of getting up at 4am now you just show up in line an hour before the game.

How do students not know this?

What this tells me is that there is a lot of talk about passion for the bball team, but when it comes down to actually going to the game less than 4,200 students really care (unless it is t.u.).

good point PJ... I have noticed that EVERY SRO has gotten in to every game, even the tu fiasco... Heck, just show up ten minutes before and they will let you in... no registering, no lottery, no ticket pick up, no emails, no second lottery, no camping out, no waiting in line, JUST SHOW UP...

Come out Roll. It seems to me that Byrne and his gang as you call them did what a majority of students asked for. In the end the students didn't want all 4,200.

I don't see how this is a PR problem for the AD.

no PR problem?!

you have roughly 44,000 students...the number 6 team in the country...and you can't get the ticket pull/lottery situation to accommodate 4,200 to go to the game? you try to do that and STILL can't garner the satisfaction with the fans/students to fill the student section?

wow. you're right. what was I thinking?

Your point might be valid if 4200 students actually came to the game. For all the talk, people aren't showing up. If you didn't get a ticket but you still want in, just show up in the damn SRO line. If you can't be bothered to stand in line for an hour, then don't give us any crap about how the lotto sucks. If you were willing to camp out for hours for tickets, then you damn well better be willing to stand in line for one hour in SRO. If not, then STFU.

I'm 2 1/2 hrs away....graduated MANY moons ago, and haven't been to a game in eons.....I was just commenting on the debacle $bill is turning this ticket thing into. The season is damn near over and it seems we STILL have problems getting kids to the damn game.....

so, lighten up, Francis......

Come on Roll, you aren't reading Byrne's message properly.

If I recall from a previous WW there are something like 16 or 17,000 All Sports passes issues.

Of those 7,000 entered the lottery.

The first attempt at granting 4,200 tickets failed because only 3,589 people picked up their tickets. Remainder is 611
Try #2 was to reissue the 611. There were still 141 tickets remaining.
The third and final try was to hand out the 141 tickets to people who were standing in line for SRO entry. Only 38 people showed up for that.

In the end there were 103 actual tickets remaining as well as some SRO room.

This adds up to students talking like they care about going to all games, but not actually going.

Durd....

again, you're addressing the symptom while the disease goes merrily on....

AGAIN, we have roughly 44,000 students and only 16,000-17,000 sports passes are issued? Just curious, but why in the hell is that?

Is it because this yahoos could give a crap about the students?
T Durden
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Actually, I contend it is the opposite. The students don't care enough to purchase and actually use their sports passes.

I don't know the exact number, but there are somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000 football season tickets "purchased" by students. I don't know about you, but I've personally seen the student section not 100% full on game day.

And at least for the texas tech game the students weren't using their allotment of 4,200 tickets.

The only point i'm attempting to make here is that with all the vitriol that was on this board after the t.u. basketball game, you would think that all of the tickets would be used. That isn't the case.

Later.

The problem is with the SRO line. No one wants to stand in the line if:

A) They can't enter (and sit) with their friends.
B) They're not sure they will get in.

I think the solution is to over-sell the student section. If they can squeeze an extra 200-300 people into each game, why not just give out that many extra tickets with the first lottery? The ushers could count the number of students entered (through scanning) and, after 4200, tell the remaining students with tickets that they will have to stand during the game.

This way, everyone knows ahead of time that they will be guaranteed entrance, they can sit (or stand with) friends, and we will get a maximal crowd.

well, Durd, I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the students....you know, the kids that are actually going to WEAR the same ring I have, not some glorified business manager that picks up a paycheck coincidentally from the same University I hold dear....

and, the reason that you are not seeing kids at the game(football) is probably the same reason I care not to go to no more than a few select games..... it's a simple economic axiom: it's just not worth my time (and money) to see what is being put on the field....sorry if that offends, but for some reason, too damn many people don't understand this....
as for basketball, I know some kids that are at A&M now, and they say it's too much of a hassle to even score tics.....to me, that's not only insane, it's just not right, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better with these half-baked ideas on how to get students to the game.....

It is not vitriole on this end, just simple frustration for the kids.

Sui,
those aren't my charges, it is from someone else in this thread. They were saying that tickets were still available. Am I wrong in assuming if there were tics STILL available, that we did not have all the students at the game that could have gone? To me, if that's the case, we still are having a problem getting kids to go to the game....

not wanting to pick a fight here......

Come out Roll. I have that same ring that you and I both hold dear. I'm not sure where you are going with the glorified business manager comment so I'll ignore.

Let's make it clear. 16,000 students don't want to go to the games. And only for 2 games a year do 4,200 (t.u. and probably OSU) students want to go to the games.

The student that you talk to are alloted 4,200 tickets and a majority of the time they don't use them.

So why clear the arena of many 12th Man donors so some apathetic kids can party, study, spend their time on other things instead of going to the games?

That would be great. Have the #6th ranked team in the nation play in front of 3,589 students.

To me, if that's the case, we still have a problem with people claiming they want to go to basketball games but aren't willing to put in any effort.

It's incredibly easy to go to a game. No one has EVER been turned away from SRO. EVER. How can anyone seriously say that the old 'camp out overnight just to get ticket' method was easier? It requires far less of a time commitment to get into a game now than it did when we were pulling tickets. You can't force people to go to games when they don't want to.

I think, Durd, that having just that many kids going to a bball game where 44,000 kids go to school IS the problem. As I see it, they ($bill and his henchmen) have come up with all these schemes to get tics into the hands of students, and it only frustrates the process. Do you honestly think that having a lottery system 2 and 3 times over is going to excite alot of these kids for a ticket? Hell no.....After the first attempt, the effort for ticket pull becomes apathetic at best....then the third time people are surprised there isn't any more interest than there is?
Bottom line: getting tickets to a well-publicized game is a joke, and it becomes amplified by these half-baked schemes from the AD's office.

PS and there is more than 1 student I am referring to......there is only 1 I am referencing that is related to me, however.....

Again, Durd, I think we both are on the same page. My frustration is at an inept AD's attepmt at distributing tics; yours (not to put words in your mouth)is at the kids....

Come Roll, as I see it this AD is far from inept. It is quite possible that he is the best AD that this fine school has had. For sure the best in recent years.

As for the process on ticket pull, this same AD has said numerous times that student government works with the athletic department on how tickets are distributed.

You son/daughter and their buddies need to get on that committee if they want their voice heard.

One last thing. I'm not frustrated at the kids in general. Just those that came to this message board and complained about student ticket allotment and then didn't bother to either pick up their tickets or decided that entering a lottery for the second go round was just too much effort. Oh and didn't go pick up the 103 tickets that were waiting at the door prior to the texas tech game.

Someone fill me in on teh exact process...

I could see multiple students registering online, getting an email telling them to pick up the ticket, but not seeing the email in time.

Could this be possible?

Here's how it's going to work for Baylor, it was similar to this for Tech, but one day for registration and only one day for pick up instead of 2

BAYLOR STUDENT TICKET INFORMATION

As with the previous game, a weighted lottery system will be used for student ticket distribution for the Texas A&M vs. Baylor men’s basketball game on February 24th.

Students with all sports option valid must register for the Baylor student ticket lottery and will have two full days for registration beginning at 8 am on Monday, February 19 and concluding at 5 pm on Tuesday, February 20. Registration can be completed online at www.aggieathletics.com anytime during this period or at the student ticket windows located in the Zone Plaza on the north end of Kyle Field from 8-5 on both days.

The lottery will be held at 6 pm on Tuesday, February 20th with results immediately available online at www.aggieathletics.com. Students selected in the lottery will also be notified by e-mail that evening.

Distribution of tickets will be held over two full days, Wednesday, February 21st and Thursday, February 22nd from 7 am to 5 pm.

Students are required to pick up tickets in person by presenting their student ID. Student ID’s must be legible and no other form
of identification is acceptable. If unclaimed tickets remain, an announcement regarding a second distribution will be made on Thursday, February 22nd.

the best AD this school has had? Possibly, but there isn't much to compare to, as far as I'm concerned. So that ain't sayin' much.

And it's not my kids. A nephew (fish camp counselor muckity-muck), and some of his friends, and some of my friends' kids that are freshmen this year. My kids will...well, that's another subject altogether.

I really like aggiebryan's solution to the ticket situation. Transportation services already does this with parking permits. They simply oversell for some of the lots, knowing that not all the passes will be used at the same time. I am sure there is some way the athletic department can calculate/estimate how many people we could squeeze in as SRO in addition to the actual student seats. Then 4500 or 5000 or however many tickets could be distributed in one lottery and all the students could be informed that they are guaranteed entry into Reed, but not necessarily a seat. Hopefully even with the non-pullers and no shows the seats could still be filled.

as with any game, there will always be people who buy tickets and then do not show on gameday.

in the case of the student lottery, the students that have been selected to receive tickets but do not show, have decided that they do not want to go after all, so instead of having to scalp the tickets or give them to friends because they received them through the mail, they just don't pick them up.

quote:
It requires far less of a time commitment to get into a game now than it did when we were pulling tickets.

which, in turn, makes the people that have the tickets less appreciative of them and thus more likely to not use them or pick them up.

when you camp out for tickets you get them then and there, and you'll likely use them because you put so much effort into obtaining them.

Here's what I think is happening with the lottery:

1) They request people interested to request tickets.

2) All that want tickets (for themselves, a friend/relative or TO SELL) respond.

3) Those that wanted them for themselves or a friend/relative mostly show up, with exceptions for things that pop up you can't really control.

4) Many that intended to sell their tickets have picked them up, but others that tried to sell them don't pick up because they haven't had someone offer to pay their inflated prices posted on eBay/craigslist/texags/wherever.

5) Athletic department redraws from others that requested and get another 500 to show up and pick up while giving another group that want to sell as shot at a pay day.

6) 141ish people, many those that didn't get someone to pay out the nose, don't pick up the second either. Also not picking up are people that didn't see the late email on the 2nd lottery, couldn't pick up on time, made other plans already or were disgusted with the lotto system and decided TV would have to do.

Round 1: 611/4200 is 15% not picked up
Round 2: 141/611 is 23% not picked up

In short, lots of valid reasons for non-pickups, but I saw a lot of tickets go unsold on the internet locations and that makes me wonder if they were the bulk of the reason for non-pickups.

Simple solution: Students that get a ticket but do not go to the game is locked out for the remainder of the season. Unless they can produce an Obit of a family member.

Far fewer students would registar, and the people that do will want to go.

They should definitely keep track of which students chosen in the lottery did NOT collect their tickets.

If they don't...keep them out for the next game.
