MLB Signing Day Update

I have nothing to report right now, the only drafted players that I know are coming to Texas A&M next season are Blake Stouffer, Ben Feltner and Jordan Chambless.

Every other player that was taken in the draft that signed with/or playing at Texas A&M has had a serious offer thrown their way. We will find out tonight if Middlebrooks, Britton, Loux and Newmann are coming to A&M or signing with their respective clubs. The deadline has created a flurry of activity and I won't guess or speculate what will happen with these players because it will be one way or the other very soon.

Now each and EVERY report on any player you see at Baseball America, the local paper covering a team or a fan website says that ALL of the players are signing. Even after I found out two nights ago that Stouffer was returning, those in Cincinnati still claimed he would agree to terms. The St. Louis papers were buzzing about Kyle Russell leaving Texas and as we all know now, that was wishful thinking on whomever that reporter was talking too with the Cardinals.

90% of the players drafted in the first 10 rounds sign pro contracts so saying that all of them are going to skip college and go pro is the percentage call to make but that is not necessarily the case with these players.

I was told a long time ago that "pro baseball has few rules and plenty of money but college coaches have no money and plenty of rules" so you can only imagine the number of calls and promises that are being made to players across the nation when college coaches have no way to respond. This is a game heavily stacked in MLB's favor but we can and shall see talented players at Olsen Field no mater what happens in the next seven hours.

As soon as I find out something I will update this post but as of now Texas A&M has not had any of these drafted players sign with a major league club.

I didn't realize that Britton and Loux were even thinking about signing. That's news to me.

As a Rice fan, it's looking like we'll lose the two we were hoping on seeing on campus (St.Clair and Angelini).

If the Red Sox weren't able to sign their top pick, it is hard to see them willing to leave empty handed.

Detroit offered Loux a 1st supp bonus deal near the end of July after watching him pitch 92-95 for 5 innings. But Loux turned them down to play college ball for A&M.

Looks like I was only partially correct. Cole St.Clair is returning to Rice for his senior year. Rice should have the top pitching staff in the country next season, in my biased opinion.

Loux was offered sandwich round money and turned it down? Wow not many do that. it's good to hear of players valuing the college experience.

Will Middlebrooks has signed with the Red Sox and will not attend Texas A&M.

Losing Middlebrooks is a tough blow to the future. Hopefully we have more talent in the pipeline.

The only question mark on Loux is the health of his arm.

There is no question about Loux's arm, he had never had a problem before this spring and did not have any problem this summer.

Loux is at Fish Camp and is excited to be an Aggie.

I chatted with a reporter from Tampa who thinks Newmann has signed as well. The focus is on David Price, the #1 pick who signed with them earlier today so he did not have a bonus figure for me.

I now hate the Red Sox more than I ever have before in signing up Middlebrooks and Britton. Toronto is right behind them in signing Ahrens and Eiland.

Given the losses suffered in the draft, some of the freshmen (Loux, Daab) and transfers (Robertson/Speake) are really going to have to step up in their first year in Aggieland. Not to state the obvious, but there looks to be quite a dearth of experience on the mound for the Ags. With the 5 game per week schedule, pitching depth will be more important than ever.

The Middleton kid should be able to help some of that out, but yeah, today was just brutal.

Frankly, I'm not that concerned about Newmann. It would certainly be good to have him back, but I think he is a bit overrated (maybe because of the injury) based on his performance last year.

Having newmann back would be huge and if he comes back he will be the ace of the staff. He had some bad outings but was by far better than anyone we had other than kyle. There is a reason we lost alot of sunday games and won most of our friday and saturday games. If i had to pick whether we got blake or newmann back i would pick newmann in a heartbeat. Nothing against blake but starting pitching is what wins conference championships.

Somebody posted on another forum that Britton got a lot of money relative to his draft position.

It is being reported the Middlebrooks signed for $925K and Britton signed for $700K. No word yet on Newmann's bonus.

clendenin:

Not just the money, but the type of organization you are joining - how much would you put on that for players in making a decision.

The problem is that's not saying a whole lot. The entire staff's pitching performance got better near the end of the season, but I'm still surprised Newmann was valued as high as he was. If I had had to choose, I much rather would have had Blake back. I'm pretty confident Rob can put together a staff at least as good as we had last year with what's on campus already.

Depends on what you classify as being on campus already. Players that were on the team last year? Or are you including new guys that have already signed up with us?
clendenin

Newmann signed for $250K.

There are already big time arms on campus. This recruiting class has multiple top JUCO pitchers as well as top high school arms beside Britton.

Barrett Loux is rumored to have turned down second round money from Detroit, so the Aggies did not come up empty in the tug-of-war with the professional dollars.
