He said that basically Nick Saban was interested in the alumni and boosters helping him recruit. So Saban had potential recruits put auctions up on eBay for random items, and the boosters would pay them money.

Sounds a prudent use of EBay. I have an old friend who used to wrestle at a major Big Ten university in Iowa, but I'm not saying which.

Anyway, he told me how "back in the day" someone would come to their room and tell 'em they needed to go take out the trash in a particular place in the dorm.

Well, that particular trash can would contain something of value, a gold watch or something similar. The wrestlers knew that such item could be taken to a local pawn shop where the owner would give them top dollar (not pawn dollars) for said item.

EBay sounds quite a bit more efficient and hard to trace.

eBay story is much less believable than the poker chip stories...

I found thisto be entertaining on Nick Saban.

I had an unnamed friend at an unnamed university tell me that old alums would shake his hand and when he drew it back a $100 bill would be in it. Now remember this is over 40 years ago and after inflation that is like $1000 now (you could buy a new automatic V-8 Mustang for about $2500 or so then).

A guy I knew played an unnamed sport for some school in 1976, and they all got cellphones for FREE.

I knew a guy that wrestled for an unnamed university located on a major interstate highway due north of DFW that bragged about the $100 handshakes every chance he got.

That's for wrestling. Lord knows what they pay, err I mean paid, the players of an unnamed sport in which said school has won multiple MNC's...

I dated the intramural secretary back in the day, and she came to A&M because she was engaged to a lineman. She said after a game they would go to the post office and pick up envelopes with cash in them from various places. No personal knowledge....too busy looking over my shoulder!
