My in laws recently told my wife and I for our upcoming milestone birthdays in the next couple of years, they would like to take us all on a trip somewhere. It was suggested that we would rent a house/condo for a week or so in a location that we could play a lot of golf, first and foremost. That said, he and I are the only ones of the 7 going that really play, so it can't be a golf-only location. My wife and kids may play a little bit, but I doubt a full 18 is what they want to do. So, there has to be a lot to do other than golf.

They live in Long Beach, and own a small second home they rent out half of the year on a course in Indio/Palm Springs. This was offered as one option - for them to fly the 5 of us out there for a week. My only reservation about the idea is that it would feel like they were hosting us, vs. also being on vacation themselves. On the other hand, the lodging would be "paid for" so that may open up some additional higher-end course possibilities.

We were told to pick a location or two we would be interested in, and they would look into it. We weren't given any other restrictions other than we are staying in one place the entire trip, no moving around. While some places we have discussed I know can quickly get pricey, it was understood that this is not an "unlimited budget" trip either, so Monterrey, Streamsong, Sand Valley, etc. are not on the table.

What I've come up with so far:

-Palm Springs/Indio
-Broadmoor
-Orlando - my son goes to school there, so I thought Bay Hill would be a good spot if he can't take a full week off, so we can all see him.
-Myrtle Beach
-Scottsdale
-Pinehurst - a stretch both budget wise, and other activities, I imagine
-Branson

I'll throw Hilton Head out there. Plenty to do on the island and Savannah is only 30 miles away.

What time of the year?

All those places on your list, I'm just not sure about non- golfers.

My favorite would have to be Palm Springs/La Quinta PGA West between Jan - May. Plenty of golf courses but other than some hiking, shopping, and Cochella, I'd be bored out of my mind if I was a non-golfer.

If summer, Hilton Head. Warm atlantic in the summer is very nice.

What kind of things are the non-golfers wanting to do?

Bend, Oregon is a great time if they like hiking, biking, swimming, etc. but probably not a great one if they are wanting to go shopping or bar hop (though it's got some great breweries and distilleries).

I haven't personally been, but Walla Walla would be fun if they like doing winery tours.

My oldest daughter and I are the only ones who play golf unless extended family is meeting us. So I'm starting to have to consider this as well for trips. We tend to drive, so I focus on areas closer to Texas, but with cooler weather.

Here's my recommendations.

1) Arkansas / Missouri Ozarks. Branson and lake houses along with some really great golf courses in mountain scenery. Lots of other outdoors stuff to do as well including kayaking, fishing, hiking and the touristy / theme parks stuff.

2) Pick a Colorado mountain towns that offer lots of cooler weather in the summer and summer time ski area activities to go along with golf. Breck is a great one with lots of stuff to do up on the mountain and lots of opportunities to hike and fish along with a fun town as well.

Our personal favorites are below, but seem to be down the list for others compared to going to Colorado.

3a) Northern New Mexico (Albuquerque / Santa Fe area specifically) Lots of touristy things to do, casino, Bio Park, great food, lots of outdoors hikes, great public golf, Sandi tram rides to the ski area, a couple of museums.

or

3b) Ruidoso, (southern NM). 7ish golf courses (although some private), lots of fishing opportunity in stocked public lakes and the river. Lots of touristy things in the town as well as the Casino, Horse track, dude ranches. Great hiking as its surrounded by NF and the town has hiking trails along the river (including the fairy trail for kids). Day trip to White Sands.

Reading between the lines, I think their 2nd home (2 hour drive from LB) would be cost effective for them as they're flying all of you out. Imagine if they have to fly to Hilton Head, fly all 5 of you out, rent a house and now they're going to double or triple the cost.

If I'm you, and I'm not, I'd thankfully accept their offer of PS...and also rent a car when I get there. Now you have 2 cars to move around your inlaws and your family etc.

Based on them being southern California, Sedona, Flagstaff and Las Vegas could also be options to meet in the middle and allow them to drive (assuming you are in Texas).

St. George would probably be my suggestion if it was golf only, but that's not feasible for a family tourist vacation.

Palm Springs is pretty unbeatable in terms of the amount of awesome courses, assuming that you guys aren't going during the summer. If you are, I'd obviously choose somewhere further north

Bass pro resort is very nice.
All kinds of stuff to do there

You can play all of their courses and any others around Branson.

Another place that I've been that I can't recommend enough is The Wilderness Club in Eureka Montana.
Amazing course. Lots of outdoor stuff.
