Tesla has two factories for their Superchargers, one in Buffalo, NY (Which still employs >1400 people) and one in Shanghai. I'd be surprised if this is indicative of them cancelling future installations and is rather Musk making it clear he's unhappy with their current rate of rollout/efficiency of operation.

People have no idea why they got canned, but can spin lots of negative theories.

When something doesn't go to his liking or perform as he expects, he quickly pivots. Better than letting dead weight hang on forever like ford/Gm.
