I went to this one place off of West Gray near Shepherd that was pretty good. I can't remember the name of it, but I was with a girl that was raised in Mexico and she said "lets try it, there are Mexicans around it, so it must be good."

I don't think many of you know the difference between authentic mexican and authentic tex-mex, as Yao Bling pointed out.

95% of authentic mexican actually tastes like poo to me. and you can crack a tooth on the chips. the salsa at Andy's is somewhat authentic. mixing the green and the red is the sh*t.

I'd rather just have Tex-Mex at Los Tios.

Yao: agreed on the taste of authentic Mexican food.

Yao-I'm sure you're well-versed in the cuisine of Mexico....(e.g. chips is a US thing that has been introduced to Mexico & is now served in some, though not too many, restaurants in Mexico)

The food is incredibly variable. Most of the stuff around H-town is Tex-Mex and can be quite good. However, there are lots of authentic stuff as well. Truly authentic stuff around here can vary in quality also - some is good & some is bad. Try some new places & you'll see.

chico: we asked for some chips & salsa in Zihuatanejo about two years ago. They brought us 3 chips with salsa on them. greatness.

chico...i am mostly talking about both upscale and not so upscale restaurants in Mexico. Tex-Mex kills it hands down and its not even close (in my opinion of course). but the food does vary vastly by region of course.

and i think they only serve them to gullible gringos in an effort to shatter some teeth

Tila's on Shepard?

I've only eaten there once, but I didn't seem to think of it as Tex-Mex.

Tila's is really more Santa Fe style Mexican.

Hugo's on Westheimer is pretty authentic.

For Tex-Mex, it's pretty darn tough to beat the original Ninfa's on Navigation.

For a bit more upscale Tex-Mex feel, try Teala's on West Dallas (not to be confused with Tila's).

You can never go wrong with the Queso Flameado. It's pretty awesome there.

I'll agree that the place has fallen off a little bit, but I sort of think Ninfa's has too. I used to go there all of the time... went recently and was not impressed. It was ok, but the food and ambiance seemed a lot more like your average Ninfa's.

I used to live near Tony's. Margarita's are pretty freaking strong so that's a plus, but the food is so-so IMO. Don't go on Fridays... that place is pretty brokeback then.

i have only been to the original ninfas 1 time, and i was not impressed. maybe i should try it again.... any recommendations on what to order? i have been to spanish flowers probably 15 times, and it is one of my favorite mexican food spots in houston. be sure to get some queso with beef (also, they will dish out unlimited flour tortillas; i cover them with queso). for the entree, i like the carne guisada and the cheese enchiladas.

i consider maria selma expensive

some good info on this list. last time i was at spanish flower, i was completely ripped but i swear the food was very good, especially given the late time.

chico is correct in that you really don't have to go to a traditional "sit down" type of restaurant to score some good eats.

olive - you're thinking of Teotihuacan. They have their original location on Irvington & Cavalcade; it's of slightly better quality imho compared to the one on Airline. Better place on Airline is Tampico for seafood.

Teotihuacan is Tex-Mex, not what the original poster wanted, but it's pretty good. Spanish Flowers is pretty bad, except for the flour tortillas.

Yao - go out to El Hidalguense on Long Point on some Fri/Sat nite. Get the lamb, see the cheesy lounge performers, have some hand-made corn tortillas. I can tell by your posts that you'll be thoed (or whatever the heck that is) by this place. It's unlike all the Tex-Mex joints mentioned on this thread.
Another fun place for cheesy lounge performers is Mucho Mexico on Wayside. Or try Fiesta en Guadalajara on Fulton - lots of mariachis there strolling around. It's Tex-Mex as well, but a fun atmosphere.

sorry chico but most those places are the suck. the food at most taquerias is bland or excessively hot.
of course the biggest problem is freshness. it seems marvin is always visting one of those places.
