The thread linked to in one of the earlier posts was started by me. I actually worked for several weeks with Byrne and Mike McKenzie to try and make this happen. It died on the vine.
Now, granted, having McKenzie involved does put a particular slant to the whole issue, but he copied me on his conversations with Byrne, so I know he did have the discussions.
I also talked to Byrne at a baseball game last year and he acknowledged that McKenzie was talking to him about it.
In short, Byrne said the issues were wiring (the cost to upgrade), birds nesting in the letters, and the fact that they didn't want to spend a lot of money on the sign until the west side renovations are done. He indicated maybe something could be done during that project.
I got the feeling he wasn't particularly fired up either way, but the money was the primary issue.
FWIW, I'd LOVE to see it lit again . . .for all the reasons in my earlier thread.
