Looking pretty good. Started every set a little slow, but then taking control.

Currently getting sloppy in 3rd down 9-14. Not worried though.

We've relied on our block big time today to get back in these sets and take control.

in what is a down year for SEC vball, if this team can continue to improve, a top 4 finish is probable.

Interesting. I am not sure we are on a down year but rather have 4-5 teams that are really good but crap the bed a couple of times. Florida without Stucky isnt near as strong, they were a top 5 team with her. Arkansas could actually be a top 5 team IMO. They have no weaknesses and at 17-2 or something like that the only losses to Wisconsin who is #1

Looking at the way the season has developed I think we are number 4 behind Arkansas Kentucky and Tennessee matched with Florida (w/o Stucky) in that second tier

We looked very exposed against Houston and that exposure that was shown has been used for runs of points by our opponents since. The Missouri loss is perplexing to me. TCU was understandable as was Arkansas on the road.

I think our rotation is set sans injury. With Brooke coming in for a pin if we have to make a change

As for yesterday, I think we dominated except for a large run by them of like 8 points. And we had to have a 10 point run with Hogan on the service line to win set three but our blocking was solid once again. Mueth serve was very effective on the top spin and Hogan has a very good floatinger with movement in that 10 point run.

Florida on Friday will be huge IMO and a win coupled with not losing focus against a decent Georgia team the following Sunday could put us clearly in the top 4 AND depending on the rest of the season a hosting spot albeit certain things will have to occur like beating Arkansas at home later and Kentucky on the road

I don't get why people were so surprised by the loss to Missouri. They have an assistant coach that was here last year and was the main recruiter for most of the girls on our roster. They knew our weaknesses and exposed them. Not only did they target the right players in serve receive, but they did the same thing with their attacking. They went where they knew we were weak and it showed. Mizzou owes that win to Wendel Camargo. That and a terrible game from the serving line.

I was surprised because we have been exposed on serve receieve since at least the Houston match and have still won over teams better than Missouri and we were at home

I personally dont think we can sweep the board against Kentucky, Florida, Arkansas, Auburn, Tennesee *2 but if we do extremely well in those matches and dont lose one out of the blue we have a chance to host. But that Missouri loss and another like that and more than 2 lossses against the above higher tier matches takes us out IMO

also that Missoui loss was afater winning the biggest match in last 2-3 years and we could have made great strides that weekend

Important to note too that Missouri missed six serves against us right after missing 20+ in their prior match. Our serve receive didn't hold up well but I think we have to give credit to Mizzou. In that fourth set they were serving missiles. We didn't handle them great but I doubt many would. Their hitters in that set even when out of system still scored way above expectation against our block. It was a really impressive performance by them in the fourth.

I agree that we lost the first two sets with poor serving and they did have a good game plan to limit our opposites. That dug a hole and probably bolstered their confidence. But my main point here is to compliment their performance as much as noting our faults.

Looking forward, I would guess the template Mizzou used is what concerns our staff the most - how to more efficiently knock teams out of system with our serve and holding up our serve receive. If we can't run the middles their blocks will camp on our opposites.

The blocking issues seem to be improving based on the last three matches.

Arkansas is a nice team but don't see them even as a top 10 team. Which win on their schedule would be considered a top 20 win? With Florida continuing to struggle with their backup setter, I see a few more losses headed their way.

Does anyone know if we have any commits for the 2024 recruiting class yet? I haven't seen anything online yet, but looks like we are up to 5 players for 2025 now.

So we have many scholarships to give for 2024 ??

I am sure we will get a transfer or two to fill gaps but most of the top players of 24 were committed before we hired Morrison. And the major one we had reclassified to 23 and went to another school.

In reality I would be fine if we can plug a terminal OH in and keep the same lineup for next season.
We do need a passing/ serving specialist as a DS as well.

This is assuming no roster movement and you will have some each year in this day and age of the portal

Would also like another setter, even a transfer. Next year I could see Manning taking over a 5-1 with the right development. You can tell she's way ahead of Nina defensively. No matter what, they will more than likely be giving away at least 3 rotations in 2025 to Musgrove.

This year has been tough when in ruts. We don't have any other setting options to try to change the flow, even if our setters aren't doing great. Even a S/DS would be interesting

Hogan is a Sr and Meuth is a Gr, so they may be up on eligibility. Everyone else is Jr and lower and has time left.

There are only 12 scholarships available, and we have 14 on the team. I'm not sure which two are walk-ons.

Without a few transfers, I'm not sure you have room for 5 new scholarship players.

Other teams have more players (avg size per NCAA is 16) so we have room for a couple more walk-ons.
Ag4eva95
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Most of the time DS aren't full scholarship or they are walkons(see the Corbelli days). Players using their grad/Covid year don't count towards the total scholarship totals, think we have a year or two left of Covid players. So it will be interesting! I'm hoping we carry a slightly larger roster so we have some more options when things get tough

I don't see any setter coming in to be the third setter on the roster knowing a top 5 setter is coming in the next year unless it is a grad transfer and or one of the two on the roster decide to portal out.
Looking at the box scores that are detailed from certain matches Manning is setting about .100 less in terms of setter to hitting efficiency. A LOT of this has to do with her not getting to set Lednicky at all in the current system. It would be interesting to see if you flipped setters to see those percentages.

Our immediate need is another OH1 for 2024. I can see improvement after a full year for Meuonke but will she be able to step into that OH1 role or is the portal / HS the way to go?? HS would have to be a decommit IMO from another program. And the OH1 has to be able to pass better than what we have currently

We are winning despite our serve and pass game. Imagine if that comes together either this season or next.
Ag4eva95

That's kind of why I alluded to a S/DS. Both Manning and Nina are injury prone. One rough match and all of a sudden we're a poor mama UF. With Manning, I can absolutely see her being a beast. She's been better defensively, something that Nina doesn't seem very capable of at this point in her career. She's setting the weaker hitters. With Ital, if the set isn't perfect, it's a free ball. Considering we're OOS most nights, kind of hard to rely on her for a kill. I bet Manning would be a double double machine if she had 6 rotations to work with.

Regarding Muoneke, I don't know what's she's going to look like in a year. In the past match against USC, she finally cranked a ball down the line and I was like wow. If she can learn to mix up those two shots, the sky is the limit with her. She didn't have the highest level of club training, so she had a very steep learning curve. I think she's rebounded nicely the past few matches.

Gist of this to say, I think you're right. Need a replacement for Meuth. Need a replacement for Hogan. Considering most other teams are carrying 16-18 players, I wouldn't mind a few walk ins with potential.

The COVID year scholly cap relief only applied for 1 year as understand it. Back to hard cap of 12 even with COVID kids.

TCU almost knocked off Texas losing 15-13 in the fifth last night. Would have helped with our RPI a bit

A couple of big matchups for Arkansas thi weekend with Tennessee and Kentucky on the road. Our rematch with Florida Friday at Reed and Georgia on Sunday

Game time got moved from 2pm Sunday to 1pm I believe

I'm no expert but it felt both teams' defenses, digs in particular, are a few steps above ours. The pass quality even on a tough dig allowed them counter attack more frequently. It's not good enough to just a ball up, but need to get it to the setter too.

That's how other teams handle big squads of elite players. I've heard that Eggleston was on an NIL deal rather than a scholly for tu last year when they won the natty. I assume the same for Beason at Nebraska when she transferred after last season.

After the year the Ags have had and the buzz around the program, I doubt that finding transfer talent will be the constraint. I assume they'll have to find NIL money for the ones they want if it is more than 1 or 2.

TCU ball control on serve receive is light years ahead of us right now...that was evident from last night match

If I remember we got beat based upon the first contact and their RS had a huge game we kept the OH somewhat in check but they got a lot of blocks against

Last night the OHs for TCU played really well and if they play like that for rest of season they could be in discussion for a top 16 seed but they can be up or down

when they lost to UNI I didnt think we would have any trouble with them later in tourney

They also have lst some matches that top 16 teams dont lose for us that would be the Missouri loss

Anyone know the best place to park for the game? Do you need a parking pass or is one of the garages or spots at Reed usually available?
